6. SUMMARY
Large quantities of oil exploration data have been recorded on magnetic tape
during the past 30 years, and oil companies wish to preserve this data asset
in good condition. Deterioration of the tape media is a problem resulting in
some cases from manufacturing deficiencies and in other cases from less than
optimum storage conditions.
Although it is possible to identify certain brands and vintages of tape which
it is known from experience may have problems, the most accurate and reliable
method of determining which batches of tapes are deteriorating is to perform
a data audit.
Recovering data from deteriorating tapes requires specialized equipment and
procedures, which when followed will result in a high data recovery success
rate.
